No, we’re not hungover, but we are certainly shady. We make umbrellas after all! We make them for a couple of reasons, one of which is because we want to stay outside for longer without frying to a crisp, and another is because we want to do it in style. As it turns out, the crew at Pretty Shady share that same goal. It goes without saying that we were pretty thrilled when they asked us to develop a custom beach umbrella for them, which would sit alongside some other awesome sun-smart products (custom t-shirt by Lister anyone?!).
Happily, it’s no longer under wraps and we can show you all what we’ve come up with. One of our favourite fashion bloggers, Nicole Warne from Gary Pepper Girl loves it, and we hope you do too!
Want to know the best bit? They’re giving these products away. Call them crazy, but it’s happening, and it’s happening here.
Who doesn’t know, and arguably love, the iconic Marimekko Unikko print? This beauty is certainly one of the Finnish design house’s best-known prints. As the story goes, it was created in 1964 by Maija Isola to prove to Marimekko founder Armi Ratia that a floral print could (and would) be amazing. And indeed it is, standing the test of time and looking as contemporary today as it did in the 60’s.
Recently, the lovely Suzanne from Bolt of Cloth in New Zealand got in touch about making up some umbrellas with Unikko and Joonas print fabric. This is how they turned out:
Amazing, right? Happy, sunny and beautiful…everything we want our umbrellas to be.
And before you ask…no, we’re not selling them ourselves but do get in touch with the team at Bolt of Cloth if you’d like a piece of the action!
We love seeing our umbrellas used in commercial settings, and the newly opened Dandys Rooftop at The Fox Hotel in West End, Brisbane is no exception. Our sun umbrellas look perfect in this sea of colour!
Featured umbrellas: Balmy Origami, Mi Casa Su Casa II, Wonderland, Calypso and Mr Huckabee.
Designed by Marc and Co, we think it looks like a pretty fun place to enjoy an after work tipple, and I hear their cocktails are pretty darn good. See you there!
The ever amazing Lucy Feagins is at it again, bringing the Design Files Open House back for its third year in 2013. We are chuffed to be bringing our particular brand of shade to this year’s Melbourne showcase, and being presented alongside some pretty good company.
Expanding to Sydney, this year truly is bigger than ever so be sure to mark these dates in your diary:
We’re pretty excited here at Basil Bangs HQ to be launching our latest artist collaboration with a guy we have been following for a long time, Jonathan Zawada. The phrase “prolific creator” comes to mind when trying to describe him…the guy never seems to stop!
We’re really excited to be launching our new range for summer, and with it a range of bright, beautiful outdoor cushions! You heard me, outdoor cushions.
After much demand and keen interest from you lot, we have finally done it. Featuring the same all-weather fabric as our sun umbrellas, you can go from the pool to lounge without having to worry if your swimsuit is dry or if the dog adopts one as a pillow.
Working back with neutrals and patterns, we think they work well as a set or single. And they’re a pretty easy way to spruce up your outdoor space and inject summery colour without costing a bomb. They’d also make a pretty great Christmas present, non?
We’re thrilled to release our range of new umbrella prints for summer. Featuring bold patterns and prints, this collection is possibly the brightest yet!
This year we’ve collaborated with artist Jonathan Zawada on two beautiful artist prints, as well as developing a couple of snazzy new ones ourselves.
Three prints showcase new printing technology we’ve developed that let’s us do a 360degree all over placement print onto the canopy, and truly push the boundaries of what’s possible to put on an umbrella. Who would have thought it could be so exciting to talk printing?! You can see the results on Partly Cloudy, The Shrubbery and Splice umbrellas.
And the fourth one you say? It’s the light and bright Kaleidoscope – a little bit inspired by Le Pixel, a little bit by Wonderland, and a lot by our latest office toy…you guessed it, a kaleidoscope.
So here’s cheers to a well shaded (and incredibly good looking) summer.
