A romantic update for a 150-year-old farmhouse

We step inside the garden of Danielle Symes’ 150-year-old farmhouse. See how she uses our Dusk Blue Scallop Sundial umbrella to add a soft, romantic touch to her historic restoration.

There is something undeniably romantic about a historic home, and photographer Danielle Symes' beautiful home is no exception. Together with her husband and two children, the family have been restoring their 150-year-old coach house in the Adelaide Hills. We are smitten by her recent updates, a masterclass in bringing modern liveability to a heritage home without losing its soul.

Set against the backdrop of the original stone cottage, Danielle has cultivated a space that feels lived-in and authentic. It’s pure provincial charm; complete with a crunch-under-foot gravel courtyard and a flock of chickens wandering past the table. Honestly, does it get more idyllic?

Set against her gorgeous stone home, Danielle has created the perfect outdoor space for a long, lazy lunch. It’s giving serious "afternoon in Provence" energy.

Much of the interior furniture in the home has been discovered and refurbished via thrift stores, salvage yards or online, and is a case study for creating personal spaces with character, on a budget.

The exterior space is an extension of this approach, featuring patina-rich pieces - weathered timber, woven wicker and wrought iron - which all add softness and charm.

To complete the look, she introduced our 2.8m Sundial Umbrella in Dusk Blue. The key design element here is the scallop valance. Those curved edges work to visually soften the heavy masonry of the house, adding a romantic, vintage-inspired silhouette that feels right at home in a country garden.

When a trip to the French countryside isn't in the budget, you can bring the French countryside to your backyard!

Basil Bangs Dusk Blue Patio umbrella with soft scallop valance against heritage brick house

We love the colour of the soft dusk blue against the warm tones in the sandstone and brickwork. Paired with our 'woodgrain' Sundial frame finish it, she accessorised with some of our outdoor cushions in White and Dusk Blue.

If you love the look of timber but don't love the maintenance (we hear you), our 'woodgrain' frame finish is an absolute game changer. This timber-look finish gives you the warmth of timber but with all the durability of aluminium, win-win!

It just goes to show you don't need a plane ticket to find a little slice of paradise. Sometimes all you need is the right shade, a good cheese platter, a sunny afternoon and perhaps a chicken...or three!
