Instructions and Maintenance
Get the most out of your Basil Bangs with our Step-by-Step set up instructions and maintenance guidelines.
Beach Umbrella: Set-up & Use
- Make sure the lower pole is secured at least 35cm deep in the sand.
- To angle the canopy, hold on to the upper pole before unlocking the hinge. To unlock the hinge, turn the dial anti-clockwise as far as possible.
- Let the upper pole rotate to the desired position. It is recommended to not exceed an angle of 45 degrees. Always try to tilt the umbrella into the wind as this will minimise the chance of it lifting out of the sand.
- To lock the hinge, rotate the dial clockwise until the vertical grip is parallel to the lower pole. The correct position is shown below.
- The Basil Hinge should feel easy to lock and unlock. If jammed, do not force the hinge to close as it may cause damage.
- Taking an umbrella to the beach is your responsibility. In windy or gusty conditions we recommend lowering the umbrella to prevent any risk of it flying away.
- Watch our helpful video for set up tips & tricks at the beach. You can watch it here.
If you’ve used your umbrella, give it a good shake and make sure it’s completely dry before popping it into its carry bag.
While our canopies are both water-resistant and waterproof, we recommend allowing your umbrella to dry out before storing it to avoid any mould.
Storing it in between uses will extend its life and minimise wear and tear, giving you the best quality shade for longer.
When set up correctly, our umbrellas are strong and durable in light winds.
It's imperative that your umbrella is not left unattended at all times, and that your umbrella is properly secured into the sand. Please refer to our set up instructions above.
We recommend digging it into a depth of approximately 20cm. You can do this by hand, or alternatively, we recommend using our sand anchor.
In stronger winds, we recommend collapsing your umbrella.
Patio Umbrellas: Set-up & Use
- To install your umbrella, lie the canopy half down horizontally on a stable surface. Take lower pole and either gently slide into the upper half of the umbrella, ensuring that the tubes line up. In case of any resistance, stop, and re-align.
- DO NOT try to force the umbrella halves together while upright in a vertical position.
- Once assembled, carefully lift and place the umbrella into the umbrella base.
- Always secure your umbrella to an appropriate umbrella base. If using a mobile base, ensure enough weight is applied to the base eg. sand bags or weight bags (taking into account the weather conditions).
- Do not leave umbrella open when unattended and make sure it's closed in windy or adverse weather conditions.
- Make sure umbrella is dry and clean prior to storing away for extended periods of time to prevent mould from developing.
- We recommend using a protective umbrella cover to help keep the canopy clean and dry when not in use, helping to extend its lifespan.
- Be careful when closing the umbrella to ensure that the canopy does not get caught or pinched by the umbrella arms. This is particularly important before storing the umbrella away for extended periods of time or if the umbrella is to be laid horizontally for storage.
- Damage to the fabric caused by pinching is not covered by warranty.
- Inspect the installation fitting/base on a regular basis and tighten as necessary.
Hose down the frame with fresh water periodically, more frequently if you live in a salty or an industrial environment.
Make sure your umbrella is dry and clean prior to storing away for extended periods of time to prevent mould from developing.
We highly recommend using a protective cover when not in use to preserve the condition of the canopy fabric, and any timber parts.
Review our detailed cleaning instructions for how to maintain your umbrella canopy.
If you’ve used your umbrella, make sure it’s completely dry before sliding over a protective cover.
While our canopies are both water-resistant and waterproof, we recommend allowing your umbrella to dry out before storing it to avoid any mould.
Storing it in between uses will extend its life and minimise wear and tear, giving you the best quality shade for longer.
We recommend regular brushing of your canopy to remove any leaves, dirt and debris.
In salty coastal environments, a monthly hose of the frame and canopy helps to remove build up of salt.
For more intense cleaning, all of our patio umbrellas have removable canopies to allow for washing.
Please refer to our Cleaning Guide for detailed instructions.

At the end of their life, all of our aluminium frame umbrellas are fully recyclable…ready to give another product some life!
Sometimes new umbrellas have been closed so tight in their carton that it makes them difficult to open for the first time.
- Get in under the umbrella canopy, and gently push out the arms at the 'elbow' joint. Once the arms have been slightly opened, you should be able to easily pull the rope and expand the canopy.
- Once the umbrella is open, make sure the umbrella Spacers have been installed. This will stop the umbrella from closing locking in. when collapsed, and make it easier to open going forward.
The Go Large, Caspar, Sundial+ Patio Umbrellas all come with Spacers and installation instructions taped to the frame.
These get installed into the arms to assist with easy opening and closing. If they are not installed, the arms can 'lock in' to the frame, which makes it difficult to open and close.
Sometimes the Spacers get accidentally thrown out during set up. If this sounds like you, please get in touch.
Our Go Large, Caspar, Sundial+ Patio Umbrellas are all rated for use up to 'Gale' force conditions, according to the Beaufort Scale.
That said, we would never suggest that umbrellas be left open and/or unattended in these conditions. A general rule of thumb, is if it is too windy to comfortably sit outside, it is too windy for an umbrella to be left open.
Read more about wind ratings and the Beaufort scale on our blog.
Beach Tent: Set-up & Use
Check out our nifty video on our Youtube channel showing you how to set up your Beach Tent. Check it out here.
If you’ve used your tent, shake out any sand and make sure it’s completely dry before folding and storing in its bag.
While our canopies are both water-resistant and waterproof, we recommend allowing your tent to completely dry out before storing it to avoid any mould.
We recommend regular brushing of the fabric to remove any leaves, dirt and debris. Spot clean with luke warm water and a mild detergent for any stubborn marks.
Make sure that you have the secured the guide ropes (looping it back on itself) and that they are pulled tight. Please refer to our great set-up video for how to do this.

Timber Deck Chair: Set-up & Use
Firstly, don't panic - this is not a product fault.
Simply fold your chair so that it's closed. Pull the arm rests forward slightly and re-open your chair. The arm rests should rotate forward in the correct direction.
You can also choose to not use the arm rests and keep them both down. It's up to you!
Our timber deck chairs are the ideal outdoor companion, though like any timber product, they do require some care and on-going maintenance.
Please be aware that persistent exposure to humidity, extreme UV and saltwater environments will eventually cause damage and premature weathering of your chair. To keep it looking good, we recommend storing it in a dry, low-humidity environment when not in use.
- Frame: remove any sand or dirt then clean with mild soap and a soft brush and then air dry in the sun.
- Fabric sling: remove and wash using a mild detergent and cold water, line dry.
The Monte and Beppi deck chairs have been oiled which gives the timber a warm, natural feel and is perfect for most uses in the garden, around the house and poolside.
We recommend re-coating your chair every 3-6months periodically with Linseed or Hardwax Oil (e.g. Whittle Wax Evolution Matte). Simply clean the wood surface, dry, then give the surface a light sanding if needed and wipe on a thin coat of oil to finish.
Yes you can wash your chair sling.
To clean, first brush off any dirt or debris before popping into the washing machine. We recommend a gentle cool machine wash, not more than 30degrees (C).
Line dry in the shade. Do not iron.
Yes! We stock replaceable slings for our timber deck chairs. You can shop them here.
Outdoor Fabric: Maintenance
All Basil Bangs outdoor acrylic fabrics feature a high technology finish, which provides long-lasting protection against mould and mildew, excellent water and oil repellence, and protects you from both sun and water for many years. The accumulation of dust, pollution particles, foreign organic materials and general dirt can damage this protection, shortening the life of the fabric and should be removed.
Here are our tips and tricks for keeping your outdoor products looking good, for longer:
Proper care and cleaning should be taken to ensure the life of outdoor fabrics. The best way to maintain your fabric is to to:
- Brush off excessive dirt from the fabric using a soft brush;
- Clean the canvas once a month with water using a low-pressure hose, reducing dirt accumulation. It is very important that after cleaning with water, the canvas is completely dry before being stored.
If periodic washing with water is done, in most environments, you should only need to do a more thorough cleaning every 2 or 3 years. Periodically, the fabric should undergo a more thorough cleaning:
- Again, brush fabric with a soft bristled brush, spray with warm water, then
- Apply a gentle natural soap, rinse thoroughly and air dry. You can do this on a 'gentle' or 'delicates' cycle in a washing machine, using a gentle soap.
Any early signs of mould and mildew must be removed immediately. Review our detailed cleaning instructions for more information on how to care for solution dyed, Acrylic fabrics.
Please note: these instuctions apply to cushions, bean bags, umbrella canopies and other soft furnishings. For Picnic Rugs, please refer to our cleaning guide below.
Brush off dust and dirt with a medium to firm brush (like a dishwashing brush).
Spray the fabric with clean water. If a hose is used, try to avoid high pressure – you don’t want to strip the fabric.
Prepare a solution of solvent-free soap in warm water (no more than 40ºC) and apply it on the fabric.
Scrub with a soft brush allowing the solution to penetrate the fabric.
Rinse with water to remove all traces of soap.
Leave it to air dry completely before storing.
Basil Bangs acrylic fabric is highly resistant to the growth of fungus, mould, and mildew, however it’s important to note that these microorganisms can grow on embedded dirt, especially after long periods of wet and humid weather.
To clean these stains, follow our more intensive cleaning procedures.
- Brush off dust and dirt with a medium to firm brush (like a dishwashing brush).
- Prepare a solution with 10% household bleach, 20% of solvent-free neutral detergent and 70% water.
- Apply the solution on the fabric, allowing to remain between 15 and 20 minutes maximum.
- Rinse with clean water several times to ensure all bleach residue is gone. Any bleach residue remaining on the canvas could damage the fabric.
- Allow to air dry completely prior to storing.
- Repeat the process if necessary.
Be sure to contain and dispose of the dirty water responsibly when using bleach as it can be harmful to animals and plants.
Our picnic rugs all feature a spill proof coating which encourages liquid to bead and stains to be easier to remove. While they are pretty incredible, they are not 100% stain proof.
We recommend dealing with any spills and messes as soon as possible. Here are some of our tips and tricks for keeping your picnic rug looking lovely:
- Remove food or spills immediately.
- Spot clean with warm soapy water.
- For stubborn marks, we recommend working some laundry powder into the mark before rinsing off.
- You can also try mixing some water with bicarb soda to form a paste, leaving it to sit for 10 minutes or so and then rinsing off.
- To remove grass and dirt, feel free to use a strong hose and brush! Hang over the fence or washing line to dry completely before storing.
- Importantly, always ensure your rug is completely dry before folding and storing away.
- It is not designed to be machine washed, put in the dryer or dry cleaned.
Bean Bags: Set-up & Use
We recommend not dragging your bean bags around to re-position them. While the fabric is incredible durable, they are not designed to be dragged along rough surfaces and may develop tears or holes. This is not covered under warranty.
To extend the life of your outdoor fabric and bean bag fill, we recommend storing them, keeping them dry and shaded, when not in use.

Don’t worry, it’s not you, it’s us. Well, let me re-phrase that. It’s the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). The ACCC requires all beanbag manufacturers omit the zipper tag as a mandatory product safety standard so that small children can’t open the cover without supervision and potentially suffocate. Even though Basil Bangs beanbags don’t use tiny polystyrene beads, the safety standard still applies.
How to open your childproof zipper (aka a zip with no handle)
- Find yourself a paperclip. We like a 50mm paperclip but any size will be fine.
- Keeping the paperclip in shape, thread it into the hole in the zipper - where the zipper’s handle tab would normally be.
- Use the paperclip just as you would use the handle to pull the zip up or down.
- If the zipper seems stuck, don’t force it. Make sure that you’re pulling 'out and up'. Pulling it ‘out’ first releases the very small catch that locks the zip into place.
Please note: it’s important to remove the paperclip from the zip after you have closed it back up again.

Our bean bags have a 240L capacity.
When you purchase Envee Beans via our website, you are ordering the correct amount for each bean bag.
If you are using other beans, make sure you purchase enough for 240L. A bit more is ok too as you'll often experience 10-15% compression after use.
Umbrella Bases: Set-up & Use
We recommend using a heavy umbrella base for all of our patio umbrellas.
A general rule of thumb is, the bigger the umbrella the heavier the base, and if the site is exposed to winds, we suggest extra weight again to add further ballast. No-one wants a flying umbrella!
If your patio umbrella is going in a table, the 14kg base should be fine.
For anything freestanding, we recommend a minimum weight of 25kg.
For our Double Caspar, we recommend a minimum weight of 30kg.
Please refer to our Umbrella Base Comparison Chart to work out the right base for your umbrella.
- Unscrew and remove the 3 x black grub screws from the middle of the plate. These exist to protect the thread in the base plate.
- Align the holes in the spigot, with the holes in the base plate.
- Screen the 3 x countersunk bolts through the spigot and into the base plate. Secure tightly.
For more information or extra help, please get in touch.
We recommend checking that your base is assembled correctly and tight.
- Make sure the spigot is tight.
- Check that the small grub screw on the bottom of the spigot has been tightened (relevant to 14kg & 25kg bases only).
- Tighten the knobs to make sure they are gripping the umbrella securely.
