The Art of Staying Put: A Guide to Umbrella Bases

We hear it every day: "Which base do I actually need?" To save you the guesswork, we’ve pulled together a definitive guide to help you anchor your umbrella with confidence.

Choosing the right umbrella base can be tricky - there are lots of elements to consider. Whether you are specifying for a high-traffic hospitality project or for your own backyard or pool, we hope that this guide helps you.

Site and Situation

Context is everything. If your umbrella is destined for the centre of a table, the table itself provides lateral stability and weight. In these settings, our 16kg Umbrella Base is a suitable choice. It offers a slim, low profile that stays tucked away from guests' feet while keeping the pole securely centred. If the table itself isn’t very weighty and you’re worried about uplift, you can easily add an extra base plate to take the total weight up to 30kg*.

For freestanding shade, for example, placed between sun loungers by the pool or over a garden sofa, the base must perform independently. Without the support of a table, weight becomes your primary consideration to ensure the umbrella remains a fixture rather than a flight risk. Check out the umbrella base comparison table below for our recommendations based on ‘free standing’ or ‘table setting’.

*For the smarty pants, we know that 16 + 16 = 32, but the 16kg weight also includes the spigot. So the total weight of this base when double plated is 30kg, we promise!

Respecting the Elements

Wind is the ultimate test. A protected courtyard allows for more flexibility, but for coastal balconies or elevated urban spots, mass is essential.

For exposed sites, we generally recommend a minimum of 30kg to provide the necessary ballast to handle the breeze. If the goal is a permanent, architectural finish with a zero-trip hazard, our In-Ground Sockets or Above Ground Deck Plates offer a seamless, high-end alternative.

Matching Scale to Mass

The rule of thumb is simple: the larger the canopy, the heavier the anchor.

  • The Classics: For the Weekend, Premium Beach, or Luxury Parasol umbrellas, a 16kg base is our go-to for reliable daily stability if in fairly protected spots. For windy sites, we suggest an extra plate and the 30kg base.
  • The Statement Pieces: For larger frames like the 2m or 2.8m Go Large, Sundial and Caspar, we recommend a minimum of 30kg to 35kg.
  • In windy conditions and rooftops, we suggest In-Ground Sockets or Above Ground Deck Mounts as ‘best practice’, and umbrella bases anywhere up to 90kg if permanent options aren’t feasible.

Movement and Flow

A dynamic outdoor space often needs to move with the sun. If you are chasing the shade throughout the afternoon, mobility is key.

Our 30kg Side Wheel and 35kg Wheelie bases are designed for exactly this. They allow you to glide your umbrella into position without the heavy lifting.

Coastal Integrity

Living by the ocean introduces the constant challenge of salinity. For maximum corrosion resistance, we recommend our Galvanised Umbrella Bases. These bases undergo a hot-dip galvanisation process, providing a hard-wearing finish that stands up to the elements far better than standard steel with a powder coated finish.
